Landa earthquake in northern Japan, No Victims

Tokyo (ANTARA News / Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan, Sunday, Japan's Meteorological Agency said, there are no reports of property damage and nuclear facilities safe.

An earthquake occurred at 12:33 local time (10:33 GMT) was also felt in Tokyo.

The epicenter 40km beneath the sea on the east coast base Fukusihima prefecture, Japan's main island, Honshu, about 240km northeast of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

No tsunami warning was announced.

Center for nuclear power Fukushima No. 1 and two companies owned by Tokyo Electric Power Co., operating as usual after the quake, said a company spokesman.

Sendai Airport in neighboring prefecture, Miyagi forced to suspend flights to check the runway for a moment before the operation starts again, the national broadcaster NHK said.

Earthquake is one thing that is common in Japan, one of the most active regions of the world's earthquakes. The country is hit by about 20 percent eampa in the world with strength of 6.0 on the Richter scale, or more powerful.

In October 2004, an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the Niigata region in northern Japan killed 65 people and injured more than 3,000 people.

That is the most widely genpa casualties since an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck the city of Kobe in 1995 that killed more than 6400 people.
