Dhaka (ANTARA News / Reuters) - Landslides triggered by heavy rains in southeastern Bangladesh has buried dozens of homes and killed at least 46 people, Tuesday, several officials said.

"The death toll might increase as rescue workers still looking for bodies and persons who may still live below the flattened houses," said a senior official told Reuters.

Landslides hit villages on the slopes of hills in the districts in the south and southeast of the country almost every year during the rainy season. At least 130 people were killed in the worst landslides in the port city of Chittagong in June 2007.

In recent years, disaster-prone Bangladesh, one of the poorest and most populous in the world, has seen the increasing intensity and frequency of climate-related problems.

Cyclone in 1991 killed an estimated 140,000 people and another storm in late 2007 killed more than 3300 people.

Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted nearly one-fifth of Bangladesh could lose their land in 2050 because of rising sea levels caused by global warming.
