Bangladesh bars 11th Police For Murder
Dhaka (ANTARA News / Reuters) - A Bangladesh court jailed 11 police Sunday on a charge of murder without trial two years ago, court officials said.
It was the first arrest police accused of murder outside a court in Bangladesh, and they were jailed after appeals from human rights groups which accuse law enforcement officers killed at least 200 people detained since January 2009.
The cops gave himself up after a summons related to a murder that took place in July 2008.
They will be formally charged on July 27, said an official court in Natore, 230 kilometers northwest of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
"We are glad the suspect was sent to prison. We hope they are prosecuted," said lawyer Zahir Azad told reporters.
Bullet holes in the suspect's body is discovered in a remote area near Natore four days after he was arrested by police.
According to police, he was killed in a shootout during a raid on the hideout villain, but her family said that he was murdered in custody.
Almost every day someone died in Bangladesh in a gunfight between criminals and law enforcement officials, newspapers and officials said.
One suspect died in police custody in Brahmanbariam east, 100 kilometers from Dhaka, after he was arrested on Saturday. Police stated that he died of a heart attack, but her family says officers tortured him to death.
