U.S. Citizen Released From Peruvian Prison

LIMA (AFP / Reuters) - U.S. citizen Lori Berenson in Peru was released from prison Thursday after serving 15 of the 20-year sentence after being convicted of a left-wing guerrilla group leader.

Women from New York who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, had been arrested since been arrested on a bus in Peru in 1995 for allegedly became leader of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, or MRTA, a guerrilla group active in the 1980s and 1990s.

Her family insisted that he was wrongfully demanded and never took up arms during the period of social unrest in Peru.

Tuesday, court officials approved her parole in a prison in the area Chorillos, Lima, where 40-year-old woman living with her son.
