One Killed, Three Injuries We Get Mine Field Mushrooms in Croatia
Belgrade (ANTARA News / Xinhua-Oana) - One person was killed and three others wounded when they wandered in a mine field when they're taking mushrooms, near the small town of Otoca, Croatia, 150 kilometers southwest of the country's capital, Zagreb.
Croatian newspaper "Vecernji List", Monday reported Daniel Smart, who was 29 years old, died instantly when he stepped on a landmine Sunday night.
The second man, MS, was taken to a hospital near the scene, Rijeka, in critical condition due to severe wounds in the lower body and pelvis.
Two more people, identified as TS and TR, suffered minor injuries caused by floating mines and allowed home from hospital.
"We still can not say for sure why they were there (minefield)," said police spokesman K. Maodus. "We tried talking to them but they're still surprised."
Local villagers praised for issuing all victims of land mine after hearing the explosions. Minefield are reported to have a clear signal.
The investigation is being conducted with the help of Croatian Mine Action Centre.
Minefield in the rural areas of Croatia is a warning about the civil war that hit the countries of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
According to the Croatian Mine Action Centre, a total of 700 000 mines and bombs do not explode still pose a threat in an area of 1350 square kilometers in the territory of Croatia.
Croatia has a great opportunity to finalize negotiations on EU membership in 2010. Year 2013, maybe even already in 2012, allegedly accepted Croatia as a European Union member states.
