President of Sudan United Nations Staff Warn Alcohol Problem

Khartoum (AFP / Reuters) - President of Sudan, pengadian sought by the UN war crimes charges, has warned that the world organization's staff that they will face beatings if caught selling alcohol.

"Anyone who drinks alcohol, we whip them. Anyone who makes the alcohol, we whip them. Anyone who sells alcohol, we whip them. I do not care whether they are UN or human rights organizations," said Omar Hassan al-Bashir in speech on the election campaign, which aired on television the Blue Nile Sudan.

Bashir, powerful orator who used to spice up his campaign with calls of nationalism and Islam, speaking in Omdowan, a village just east of the capital, known as the religious center.

The President, who sought by the International Criminal Court (ICC) with an arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Sudan's Darfur d west, has made a campaign trip to the country before the elections that will begin next month.

Alcohol banned in northern Sudan are in predominately Muslim and punishment beatings are common for those who are caught drinking, making or selling it.

The foreigners are not excluded by the law, but some UN staff have diplomatic status. There is no official at the UN mission in Sudan that could be reached immediately for comment for.

Nigerian football star Stephen Worgu last year claimed he had been sentenced to 40 lashes for driving drunk in Khartoum. Worgu, who played for the club Al Merreikh, Ondurman said he was not guilty.

That was the last of a series of prominent cases in Sudan, which highlighted syariahnya law.
