Sharapova Facing Six Week Absence Since Injury
Miami (AFP / Reuters) - Maria Sharapova absent threatened action for six weeks because of an elbow injury, tournament organizers said next week's Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday.
Three times grand slam champion was supposed to compete in a tournament in Key Biscayne, Miami, but the results of an MRI exam showed bruises on his right elbow.
Organizers said in a statement that the Russian tennis player, who won earlier this year at Memphis but eliminated early in Indian Wells on Sunday, expected to be absent from competition for three to six weeks.
Two world ranked Dinara Safina and men's singles champion Sony Ericsson 2008 Nikolay Davydenko also withdrew from the tournament in Miami this year. Russian Safina tennis player suffered a back injury while Davydenko suffered a cracked left wrist.
Five times champion Serena Williams and sister Venus became the leading player in the tournament's daughter while Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal at the top of the son.
