Extradition of Mexico Ex-Governor to the U.S. Because of Narcotics Cases

Mexico City (ANTARA News / Reuters) - Mexico mengesktradisi a former governor to the United States, Saturday, to face charges of drug smuggling cases.

The former governor was accused of helping to move hundreds of tons of Colombian cocaine into the United States through the resort in the Caribbean, Cancun.

Mario Villanueva, governor of Quintana Roo state the period 1993-1999, the United States submitted to the agency at the airport in Toluca, capital of eastern Mexico, according to statements the prosecutor's office of Mexico.

Villanueva is serving a sentence of six years in prison for money laundering after being arrested in Cancun in 2001. After his release from prison in 2007, he was arrested on charges of involvement in drug smuggling and extradited to the United States.

Prosecutor's office, citing the report of the United States, said that Villanueva received five hundred million dollars for every ship cocaine he allowed through his state.

Cancun, Quintana Roo city's most popular, attracting hundreds of foreign tourists every year, who was fascinated by the white sandy beaches and blue sea.

Nearly all the cocaine consumed in the United States, smuggled through Mexico. In recent years, transactions worth millions of dollars that have fueled a bloody war in Mexico as the cartels fight for control of another illicit drug in the smuggling route.

More than 22 thousand people have been killed in violence related to drug since President Felipe Calderon took power in December 2006.
