Four People Killed in Explosion in Algeria
Ammal, Algeria (AFP / Reuters) - The explosion had destroyed part of an Algerian paramilitary police barracks and killed at least four people, moderate two police officers, security sources said Friday.
Algeria is struggling to eradicate the guerrillas who have links with Al Qaeda network. Guerrillas have increased regularly attacks including bomb attacks against government targets, although violence in general has decreased.
"We have at least four people were killed and among them two gendarmeri (paramilitary police)," said a security source, who did not want to be identified.
Two local residents say the they heard an explosion at about 3 pm local time (at 9 pm Friday) at the barracks, near major highways in the village Ammal, approximately 60km east of the Algerian capital, Algiers.
There was no official confirmation that there was an attack on the barracks and an official refused to comment on what had happened.
A Reuters reporter at the scene said the wall around the front of the barracks were completely destroyed and that several buildings inside the walls were also damaged.
Barak's gendarmeri accommodate one unit responsible for the enforcement of law and order in rural areas in Algeria.
Villages in the area Moumerdes Ammal, mountainous area in the past becomes a place no one is safe from the guerrillas.
Government and the guerrilla conflict reached its peak in the 1990s and as a whole around 200,000 people have died, according to estimates NGO groups. There was a marked decrease in violence since then.
