Power Belongs Party won a landslide victory

Colombo, KOMPAS.com - The ruling party United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won a landslide victory in elections confirmed Sri Lanka 8 April and then to pocket the two-thirds of parliamentary seats.

Certainty of President Mahinda Rajapakse victory party was revealed in the final result of the vote count was announced, Wednesday (21/4/2010).

UPFA won 140 of 225 seats in the legislature. Misfortune hit from the opposition United National Party (UNP), which won only 60 seats while the minority Tamil party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), ranks third with 14 seats.

Democratic National Alliance (DNA) left-wing leadership of former leader of Sri Lanka Army, Sarath Fonseka, bagging seven seats in parleman which will hold its first meeting, Thursday.

UPFA ruling party must control two-thirds of the seats in parliament if the government wants to renew the Constitution that prevents Rajapakse's ambition to be elected again after the second presidential period ended in November 2016.

8 April last legislative election was followed by 61.26 percent from 14.08 million voters. This real participation rate was the lowest in the legislative elections of Sri Lanka. Participation rate in the previous election (in 1989) reached 63 percent.

8 April's election is the first democratic party after the end of the civil war 30 years ago.
