General McChrystal Backward
WASHINGTON, KOMPAS.com - U.S. General Stanley McChrystal, Wednesday (23/06/2010), said stepped down as commander of the NATO-led force in Afghanistan because of commitments at the soldiers and "to see the mission succeed."
"This morning the president has accepted my resignation as commander of U.S. and NATO coalition forces in Afghanistan," McChrystal said in a statement issued shortly after President Barack Obama announced that he had replaced the general.
"I absolutely support the strategy in Afghanistan and the president is very committed to our coalition forces, our partner countries, and the people of Afghanistan," he asserted.
"Due respect for the commitment-and a desire to see the mission is successful, I asked my resignation," he added.
Four-star general did not mention about the article in a magazine that has caused a stir this week, where he and several aides ridiculed key government officials and spoke to belittle Obama. McChrystal was appointed as commander in Afghanistan just a year ago.
Obama replace it with a U.S. war hero, General David Petraeus, stressing that it was only a change of personnel, not policy changes in the war in Afghanistan.
