German And French Press EU bans "Short Selling"

Berlin (ANTARA News / Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to consider a ban across the European Union on "short selling" stocks and bonds.

In a letter published by the German government on Wednesday, the two country's leaders said the Commission should intensify its efforts to impose tighter controls on "credit default swap" (CDS) of state bonds and short selling ', as well as measures currently in next few weeks.

"In particular we think it important to increase transparency in the` short selling 'of shares and bonds, especially government bonds, "said both.

"Work is the European Commission should also be added with a possible EU ban on all short selling of` `the whole or a particular stock and bonds or CDS as well as throughout the state bonds," they added.
