Herat, Afghanistan, (ANTARA News / Reuters) - The Taliban insurgents launched a series of attacks in western Afghanistan on Sunday, blowing the door of a prison and freed 23 prisoners were members of the group, officials said.

After his government was overthrown by forces led by the United States in 2001, the Taliban is active again in recent years, causing many casualties to Afghan and foreign troops. They also launched bold attacks against key locations including the capital Kabul.

Taliban attacked four policemen heading into downtown Farah Sunday morning, said Mohammad Younus Rasooli, the governor of Farah province, western Afghanistan, which borders with Iran.

"They first attacked a police station and detonated at the same time the prison doors Farah, which resulted in 23 prisoners escape," said Rasooli told Reuters by telephone.

Four detainees were arrested immediately because they suffered injuries while fleeing, he said and adding seven others were arrested again.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Mohammad Tousuf confirm the members of that movement is behind these attacks.
