Tank Truck Explode, Allegedly Killed 200 People
Liputan6.com, Congo: At least 200 people are feared dead after an oil tanker exploded and ignited a fire in one village in the Congo, recently. Tank truck who was traveling from Tanzania was upside down in the village of Sange, near the eastern border of the country.
Fuel oil then seeped into the village before the explosion. Five peacekeepers of the United Nations reported among the dead. Meanwhile, about 100 more people suspected of being injured.
However, the UN has denied reports that its troops were killed. UN mission spokesman told Reuters Olamide Adedeji, "There is no blue helmets (UN peacekeepers) who died."
Meanwhile, Vincent Kabanga, a spokesman for local government in South Kivu, said, "One came from Tanzania tanker overturned in the village of Sange." The village is about 70 km south of the City of Bukavu in South Kivu, near the Burundi border.
Overturned oil tanker incident was commonplace in the region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The number of victims are often too high because people usually are competing to take the oil spill. (ANS / BBC / AFP)
