Hundreds of People Killed in Massacre in Congo

Kinshasa, KOMPAS.com - Rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) of Uganda massacred at least 290 people, and probably more than 300 people, the massacre of previous unreported, in Congo, in December 2009, said a UN official, Saturday ( 27/3/2010).

The killings occurred in several villages in the northeast region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who isolated and followed a warning of the threat the rebels after a similar massacre a year earlier. "We have confirmed at least 290 people have been killed and 150 people were kidnapped," said Liliane Egounlety, who led the investigation into the killings that occurred in the district of Haut-Uele in Congo, in December.

Todd Howland, director of the office with the United Nations human rights in Congo, said the number was "able to reach 300 more."

News of the killings would be heated debate about the role and future of the UN mission widely criticized. The mission was to complain, they lack the resources to protect civilians, but also under pressure from the government to withdraw from the Congo next year.
