Israel Ready to Ship Halau convoy to Gaza
JERUSALEM, KOMPAS.com - An Israeli military source, on Wednesday (26/05/2010), said that the country's naval ships ready to prevent the convoy of humanitarian aid to the Turkish leadership of the Gaza Strip.
Israel and Egypt to close Gaza's borders after the Islamic group Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007. Gaza's population of 1.5 million people facing shortages of water and medicines.
"In accordance with the directions the Government of Israel, Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Navy's fleet is ready to help prevent it reaching the coast of Gaza," said military sources had told Reuters.
The source said, naval forces have conducted a number of exercises in preparation for enforcing the sea blockade. In recent weeks, Israel has allowed a number of previously banned goods, like clothing, shoes, wood, and aluminum into the Gaza Strip by land. Israel continues to allow the flow of humanitarian aid to coastal areas.
The military source said that if the ships were not turned assistance after being given warnings, the Israeli naval forces will rise to the top and bring the ships into the port of Israel. From there passengers and crew will be sent home and luggage items will be moved into Gaza.
