Officials: 160 Killed in Accident in South India

New Delhi (ANTARA News / Xinhua-Oana) - A total of 160 people allegedly killed when an Air India Express plane carrying 169 people failed to touch the runway at Mangalore airport on Saturday morning, according to Times Now TV report.

The report, which quoted the Minister of the Interior Karnataka VS Acharya, said that as many as 160 people may have died in the accident.

He also said the plane from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, it has kecelakana approximately 10 kilometers from the airport.

Indo-Asian News Agency reported that the plane failed to reach the runway while trying to land in Mangalore and burst into flames and fell into a ravine.

TV showed smoke coming from the plane. A total of 25 ambulances have also been deployed to the scene of the accident. As many as 10 people have been rescued and rescue operation is hampered by thick smoke consumed the plane, said airport official was quoted as saying by the report.

Airports in Bajpe, about 30 kilometers from Mangalore, which lies about 350 kilometers from Bangalore, located in a hilly area and is regarded as one of the most difficult airports for takeoff and landing.

These areas have also faced heavy rain during the last two days.

Regarding the severity of the damage, the Director General of DGCA SNA Zaidi said, "We just received a preliminary report about the accident. But we are waiting for details including the number of passengers."
