FC Barcelona soccer stars from Argentina, Lionel Messi, was appointed as Ambassador of the United Nations for Children (Unicef).
"We are happy to welcome you to the Lionel Messi as a UNICEF ambassador," said UNICEF Executive Director announced Ann M. Veneman was quoted as saying Media Center United Nations Headquarters, New York, Thursday.
The announcement itself was made in a ceremony in Barcelona, Spain.
As a UNICEF ambassador, Messi, FC Barcelona striker who was crowned World Player of 2009 by FIFA, will participate in a series of events intended to highlight the challenges facing children around the world and to help enforcement of the rights of children.
"He (Messi) is a football star who can help tercurahnya attention for children who are vulnerable and overlooked," said Ann Veneman.
UNICEF cooperation with Messi will be done primarily through the foundation's Messi-who help children less fortunate young people in Argentina to get education and health services.
Messi addition, UNICEF is currently also provides a similar title to some other world celebrities, including soccer star from England, David Beckham, singer and musician Shakira, actor Orlando Bloom, and Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan. (Ant / i)
