Slipping Railway Avalanche, Nine Killed

Castelbello, Italy: At least nine people were killed in a train wreck that slipped by a landslide near urban Alpina, Bolzano, northern Italy, Monday (12 / 4) local time. "Nine victims confirmed dead, while 28 people were injured. Seven of them were seriously hurt," said Governor of Bolzano-Bozen, Luis Durnwalder.

As quoted by AFP, the tons of stone and mud swept the front train carriage into the valley between urban Castelbello and laces at about 09:00 local time. Only a row of trees that make the trains would not be dragged up to the Adige river beneath.

Several members of the rescuers to evacuate the bodies from the debris avalanche by hand. The injured people were taken to local hospitals using helicopters.

Provincial transport adviser said Thomas Widmann, landslides caused by a leaking irrigation pipe a few days earlier and wet soil hills above the railroad tracks. Currently, investigators studied data records found in the ruins.

Trentino-Alto Adige is a region which has a majority German speakers. Economically, the area was prosperous thanks to the agriculture and wine making, industry and services, especially tourism. (TEST / SHA)
