A Pakistani Taliban Leader Killed In Shooting Raw

Asadabad, Afghanistan (AFP / Reuters) - A top leader of Pakistan's Taliban may have died in clashes with Afghan troops near the border of both countries, said a senior Afghan police officer, said Thursday.

Mauvi Fazlullah, the head of one faction of the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat Valley, was reported killed along with six of his men in barg Matal district, Nuristan province of Afghanistan, which lies near the border with Pakistan, said Mohammad Zaman Mamozai, chief of the border troops to eastern Afghanistan.

"Maulvi Fazlullah were killed in a direct firefight with border police forces ... Wednesday night," he said.

He did not elaborate further. Afghan Taliban confirmed the engagement, but insisted no foreign guerrillas involved.

The news of the death of Fazlullah appeared after the reports for a few days crossfire between troops and guerrillas in barg Matal.

Maulvi Faqir Mohammed, who leads one faction of the Taliban based in Pakistan's tribal region Bajuar, denied media reports that Fazlullah led attacks in Afghanistan.

"He was probably in Nuristan since the Taliban had retreated to the border (Pakistan-Afghanistan)," he told Reuters by telephone before the report Fazlulah death.

"He probably lives in Nuristan, but he was involved in fighting there," he said.

In an interview with British radio BBC last November, Fazlullah said that he fled to Afghanistan after Pakistani military offensive against Taliban militants in Swat Valley base in April last year.
