Washington (ANTARA News / Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 6.4 has hit the eastern part of the Andaman Islands in India and sparked a local tsunami warning, the U.S. Geological Survey Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported Monday.
The USGS said the quake struck at 1:21 pm local time Tuesday (1951 GMT Monday or Tuesday at 2:51 o'clock pm), 120km east of Port Blair at a depth of 79.4 miles (127.7 km).
"Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along the coast are within a few hundred kilomter from the epicenter," said the tsunami warning centers.
