The Diplomats Try to ship Rachel Corrie Sign in Gaza
JERUSALEM (AFP / AKI) - Some European diplomats have been involved in talks with senior officials of foreign ministries of Israel to allow humanitarian aid ships owned by Ireland to send supplies to the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli daily Haaretz.
Rachel Corrie was part of a fleet of ships that were stopped by Israeli naval forces Monday morning, but was suspended because of technical problems.
Israeli foreign ministry in recent days had been exchanging messages with a group that operates the ship to enable it to dock, according to the report. The ship was expected to arrive this weekend.
Ireland also has asked Israel to allow his ship was breaking Gaza blockade.
Rachel Corrie, the American became famous for his pro-Palestinian activists who run over by the Israeli bulldozer in Gaza in 2003, left Malta Monday with about 12 activists who climbed the ship and 1000 tons of aid.
Cargo includes cement, medical equipment, printing and paper dolls.
"I do not want to be a hero or die, but we must remain masju," said activist Jenny Graham on the Daily Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph.
Rachel Corrie's trip to Gaza was sponsored by two NGOs from Ireland and Malaysia.
On board, a Nobel prize recipient Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Ireland and former UN deputy secretary-general Denis Halliday. Also on board, a group of Malaysians who are sponsored by former prime minister of Malaysia.
Nine activists were killed when special forces troops ride six Israeli navy ships in the convoy of humanitarian aid Monday.
