House Armed men attack police in South Yemen
Aden (ANTARA News / Reuters) - Gunmen attacked police headquarters in the southern city of Aden, Saturday, and clashed with guards of the building for more than an hour, residents said.
Heavy weapon clashes and smoke rose from the area which also houses the state television in the southern port city, said residents told Reuters.
The attackers seem to be heading into the building before they leave, residents said.
They added there are several people dead.
Security officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Al Qaeda wing in the impoverished Arab state threatened to overthrow the government Friday in eastern Yemen, and called on the citizens of local tribes to lift arms against the government.
Yemen jumped at the forefront of Western security concerns, after the wing of Al Qaeda in the region based in that country claimed responsibility for the failed bombing attempts aimed at U.S. planes last December.
Yemen, which now are in mounting international pressure to quell the conflict in the country who are focused on Al Qaeda, is fighting to stop the continuous growth of separatist movements in the south and strengthen a fragile truce with Shiite rebels in the north.
