20 killed 100 injured in the explosion in Iran

TEHRAN (AFP / AFP / Reuters) - Two explosions outside a Shia mosque in Iran's Sunni-majority southeast, killing more than 20 people and wounding 100 others, Thursday night, said IRNA news agency quoted a medical official.

"Two explosions in front of the Jamia mosque of Zahedan wounding more than 100 people and 20 people were martyred," said Fariborz Rashedi, head of emergency services Sistan-Baluchestan province.

The blasts took place in Zahedan, capital of the province.

Deputy Interior Minister Ali Abdollahi said earlier, the explosion was a "suicide operations" that killed and wounded several people who are doing worship.

According Abdollahi, several members of the elite Revolutionary Guards were among those killed and injured in the attack.

Sistan-Baluchestan province bordering Pakistan and hit by attacks blamed on Sunni Jundollah.

In May 2009, a suicide bomb blast killed 25 people and wounding more than 120 in an attack outside a mosque in Zahedan.

In October 2009, 40 people including 15 members of the elite Revolutionary Guards were killed in a bomb attack in the province. That is the most deadly attacks in Iran since the 1980s.

Iran hangs Jundollah leader, Abdolmalek Rigi, last month.
