National Milk Consumption Low
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Fresh milk naturally contains minerals and essential nutrients. Consumption of milk every day can improve the nutritional status of children. Unfortunately, milk consumption in Indonesia is still very low.
National milk consumption has recently reached 10.47 liters per capita per year. The number is still far below Malaysia's 27 liters, 37.8 liters of Japan or the United States 83.9 liters.
"Indonesia still ranks second from the bottom" said Prof.Zaenal Bachrudin, Director General of Processing and Marketing of Agricultural Products Ministry of Agriculture.
Zaenal added that the main factor causing the low consumption of milk is the high price of processed milk and milk drinking habits have not membudayanya among the public. Viewed from the type of milk consumed, milk powder is the most widely consumed species and reached 43.3 percent. The forms of UHT 4.6 percent, 2.7 percent sterile milk and pasteurized milk 1.2 per cent.
"In developed countries more fresh milk is consumed as fresh milk proteins contain more active," said Zaenal in the seminars in the framework of the Archipelago Milk Day in Jakarta on Tuesday (29/06/2010).
