Bangladesh Islamic Party Activists Hold Largest 200
Dhaka (ANTARA News / Reuters / Oana) - Bangladesh police said Monday it had arrested 200 activists largest Islamic party to protest that country because of violence after three of their important party leaders were arrested on charges of hindering police to sedition.
The activists had attacked the vehicles, public offices and a police station in Chittagong on Sunday, when the Jamaat e Islami party called for protests across the country.
They demand the release of their three leaders - party chairman Moulana Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid wakllnya and other important leaders Delwar Hosain Saidee - who were detained by police last week for interrogation.
Protests were also held in other districts, but police are trying to avoid violence, and police said some witnesses. According to police, nearly 150 people were arrested in Chittagong and other places in the country.
Jamaat is a political ally of the opposition Nationalist Party, led by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who has demanded their release and asked the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government to stop "persecuting" the opposition.
Many residents accused the Jamaat in Bangladesh in collaboration with the Pakistan military during the war of independence in 1971. Approximately 3 million people have been killed in military hands and the feet-hands in the nine-month war.
