Smoking for the sake of the Gods

Liputan6.com, Polewali: Who knew that if smoking was not only done for a hobby or addiction alone. In Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi, smoking is a ritual to worship gods and ancestors.

This unique ritual called Pamulungan. Village shaman began the ritual with trunked cigarette smoking incessantly while drinking wine, eating a roast chicken, three-color glutinous rice, bananas, eggs, boiled shrimp, diamond, and gogos.

Locals believe that smoking and enjoy the meal is not a shaman, but King Mandar III incarnation of the child who liked to smoke cigarettes known.

A giant cigarette over 45 centimeters better known as Pamulungan be one of a series of rituals. Residents believe this ritual is able to calm the gods to their village to avoid natural disasters such as landslides and floods.

Pamulungan end of the healer by drinking coconut water sprinkled over the rice to the four corners of the sky as a symbol of blessing petition. This annual ritual concludes with a prayer and eat together. (WIL / ANS)
